Present Simple

Habits, Routines & Facts

When do we use it?

We use the Present Simple to talk about:

  • Habits and Routines: I wake up at 7:00 AM every day.
  • General Facts & Truths: Water boils at 100 degrees.
  • Permanent Situations: He lives in Casablanca.

Sentence Structure

FormI / You / We / TheyHe / She / It
(+) Affirmative I play tennis. He plays tennis.
(-) Negative I don't play tennis. He doesn't play tennis.
(?) Question Do you play tennis? Does he play tennis?

Important: In negative sentences and questions for He/She/It, the main verb loses the "s" because "Does/Doesn't" already carries it.

✅ Correct: He doesn't play.
❌ Incorrect: He doesn't plays.

Adding "S" (He / She / It)

In the affirmative form, verbs with He, She, and It take an -s, but there are spelling rules!

Rule 1: Most Verbs

For most verbs, just add -s.

  • work ➔ works
  • eat ➔ eats
  • play ➔ plays

Rule 2: Ending in -ch, -sh, -s, -x, -o

If the verb ends in one of these sounds, add -es.

  • watch ➔ watches
  • wash ➔ washes
  • go ➔ goes
  • do ➔ does

Rule 3: Consonant + Y

If the verb ends in a consonant followed by 'y', drop the 'y' and add -ies.

  • study ➔ studies
  • cry ➔ cries
  • fly ➔ flies
